Solis Theater

Solís Theatre displays high aesthetical and architectural values, and it is situated in the characteristical Ciudad Vieja (Old Town). It was started building in 1841, until 1843. The work started at the end of 1841, using materials of exquisite quality, some of them coming from foreign countries, e.g. Russian red pine wood, slate from Génova, marble, etc.  As a concequence of the "Big Siege" that General Manuel Orible laid to the City of Montevideo, starting from February 1843 until 1851, the works on the new theatre were affected and paralysed, resuming in 1852.  Concerning the theatre activity between the years 1843-1846, it was restricted to sporadic plays of amateur groups from the country and from another countries.  Source: Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Uruguay
