Fort of the Hill

Located in Motevideo Hill, it is one of the three forts that the hispanic period of our history left us and it enriches our historical heritage. It is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most important fort of this part of the continent concerning military engineering. It was built during the first decade of the XIX Century, as a result of the English Invasions to River Plate, in order to turn Montevideo's Bay into a sentry. Built in 1809 by request of Governor Francisco Javier de Elío, it achieved its purpose of bearing the Independency war and, then, the civil wars without falling in hands of the besiegers until 1870.  In the 1880 decade it was restructured without affecting its exterior lines equipped with modern breechloading artillery devices. Located in the highest peak of Montevideo and having received the honour of figuring in the heraldry of the Republic, it later had the undertake of, beside its specific one, lodge lookouts, being a pesthouse, a military jail and the location for a lighthouse, while the outstanding battery in the fort had the mission of greeting the newcoming friendly ships and remind the inhabitants of Montevideo of the daily sunset.   In the Artillery Room, a Krupp cannon, made in Argentina in 1889, stands out among others. Swords of different origin and replicas of swords given to General José Artigas by Buenos Aires in 1811 and by Córdoba state in 1815 are exhibited in the Sarandí Room. In ths way, the visitor can go round and observe the invaluable collections destributed in Agraciada Room, Las Piedras Room, Room of Short Guns, Rincón and Polvorín Room and then get to the walls of the fort, full of evocations and legends, to apreciate the magnificent sight of the City of Montevideo encircling the Bay.  Source: Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Uruguay
