Tacuarembó is the state of more surface in the country (15,438 km2), and as its population places it in the 9th place in the total of states, its population's density is one of the lowest: 5.9 inhabitants per square kilometre (15th place according to thin indicator).
The 84.4% of the population of the state lives in urban areas, while the population that lives in rural areas is close to the 14 thousand people (15.6%).
Tacuarembó's population is composed practically of equal number of men and women: 45,130 and 45,359 respectively.
The urban population is concentrated in the capital of the state, where 2 out of 3 people live (51,224 inhabitants). Then, stands out Paso de los Toros City with 13,231 inhabitants, which represents the 17% of the urban population of the state.
The distribution of age of the population of Tacuarembó is presented denoting a structure slightly younger than the total of the country. Demographically, this situation is called "an open window for opportunities", since an important cntingent of the population is situated in the potentially active ages from the working point of view, which allows a productive and economic expansion.
