General Information about Salto (state)

  The state of Salto is located in the North coast, covering a surface of 14,360 square kilometres and having a population of 117,600 inhabitants, according to 1996 sensus. At North it boarders on Artigas State, at East on Rivera and Tacuarembó States, at South on Paysandú State and at West on Uruguay river, which separates us from Argentina.

 

It was created in the year 1837; and the city in 1756. It is built in one the most beautiful places in the North coast of Uruguay river, a few metres far from the waterfall of that river. This waterfalls are called Salto Grande and Salto Chico (Big waterfall and Small waterfall). The city is called after the them. Its capital city (Salto) is 495 km from Montevideo, taking route 3 "Gral. José Artigas." Its population, according to data gathered by the 1996 Population and Housing Sensus, exceeds the 98,000 inhabitants.

 

During the last years, Salto has also shown hectic dynamics in the touristic sector. Proving a balanced participation in public and private matters, The state's touristic offer, mainly motivated by thermal development, is nowadays a diverse and modern one. Thousands of people, mainly coming from the South, arrive throughout the year to our springs looking for their hot and mineral water's virtues, the repairing rest and a beautiful and natural environment. When speaking about thermal tourism all year is high season and, because of this, the derived services are benefited from investmentss of high profitability. Hotels, restaurants and transports are areas of great dynamic.
