Rio Negro State is located in the west coastal region of Uruguay. It has about 9,500 square kilometres. It was created in 1881 with the slitting of a plot of land of Paysandú State, where its political, social and economic activities depended on until then.
The main population, at first, was Villa Independencia, founded in 1859 and later rebaptized with its present name: Fray Bentos, in 1900.
The area was characterized by being, in colonial times, a great ranch for the wild cattle maintenance exploited by jesuits. The lands between Urguay River and Negro River gave it that characteristics and abundance of livestock. People took advantage of this in the second half of the XIX Century, intalling Meat Salting Houses which they exported through the Uruguay river.
In fact, it was in the territory of the present Río Negro where Hernandp Arias de Saaverdra (Hernandiarias) disembarked the first bovine cattle in the territory of the then Eastern Band.
Río Negro State has more than 50,000 inhabitants, and mainly they live in Fray Bentos, capital city.
