History
The Beach Town of Piriápolis was founded in 1893 by visionary Francisco Piria, who called it "El Balneario del Porvenir". It was the hardest effort ever done by a single man in Uruguay. Piria got hold of large portions of land that belonged to one of the heirs of Leonardo Olivera. Inside the limits of his property he had tree hills: Pan de Azúcar, del Inglés and del Toro, and a beach of deep and clear waters that bordered it on south.
The first construction was the castle built in 1897, which was inspired in a model of the Italian creek, then he carried out constructions like the Port of Piriápolis, the Boardwalk of Argentinian people, the railway, the Church, the Piriápolis Hotel and the Argentino Hotel.
Francisco Piria was a man that travelled a lot, what led Piriápolis to be internationally known first than Punta del Este.
Many factors make Piriápolis beautiful: hills, woods, beaches, buildings and services that allow an important touristic activity to take place. It also has public and private Institutions, schools, secondary schools, associations, port, customs, bus station, among others.
