Paysandú is located in a prileged area because of the weather conditions, with coasts on Uruguay River and it is centre for a key area of communications whichlink the country with the rest of Latin America.
The state (with a surface of 13,922 Km2) has terrestrial access through route 3 and 24 which connect the capital and the rest of Uruguay, and also has the International Bridge General Artigas, a direct link with Argentina, to which you can access by Colón City.
The capital cuty, well-known by its historical deed as LA HEROICA (The heroic), whose origins date from 1750 as a cow house in Yapeyú, commemorates its declaration as city on July 8th every year in the so called "Festejos de Paysandú Ciudad" (Festivities of Paysandú City), where all kinds of activities are carried out and have as a base the gaucho's parades, cultural shows and sports shows where Paysandú people could achieve great things.
The Square was attecked many times, being its most heroic defence that of 1864/65 when Brazilian Armies and the army of General Vanancio Flores subdued the defenders leaded by General Leandro Gómez to a bloody place that ended with the life of the hero.
In the villager's outlook a big change was produced in the XIX Century.
The crafts allowed the begining of the industrialization of meat and leather with the advent of the first salting house (1840).
A Century later, an industrial Boom takes place with the installation of big tannery, olive oil production, brewery, sugar inventiveness, textile production, laminated scenery, citrus production and more. It is complemented with the market activity where more than 100 thousand state inhabitants have its sustenance.
