General Information about Montevideo (state)

 

Montevideo State is located int he south of Uruguay. At north it borders on Canelones state and at south on River Plate.

It is the smallest of the states with 530 suqare metres of surface, but it is the most populated one (almost the 40%). 

Montevideo Hill is its highest peak with 131 metres height. 

 

The rural area of Montevideo covers more than the 60% of the state territory, 1,360 producers develop their activities there, 5,000 people work here and 60,000 live here. 

With less than a thousandth part of productive surface of the country, it is estimated that it contributes more than the 3% of the agricultural GDP of the country.  

More than a half of the consumption of national vegetables come from the rural area of Montevideo. 

 

But the importance of Rural Monteviodeo goes beyond the pruduction and occupation of rural workers and their families. It is a green area located in the metropolitan area, playing a vital role from the point of view of environment and recreation, whicle lodging a population with self cultural values and lifestyles. 

 

It is a place with environmetal and ecological values like the wetlands of Santa Lucía River and Carrasco, as well as the west coast with the River Plate. This fact goes beyond state limits and forms a peculiar attribute of the rural areas of the metropolitan region.
